Parkway Drive Interview
In town for the Push Over Festival on March 12, Garrett from The Grind threw some questions at Parkway Drive vocalist Winston McCall. The metalcore band from Byron Bay have been dominating overseas for the past few years and last year picked up their first ARIA for their third album Deep Blue.
Garrett: Welcome back home! You haven't played in Australia since May last year. How does it feel to be home and playing once again?
Winston: It feels great. Australia is such a great place to call home and its never felt better to be back in the van and on the road. The shows have been insane, as has the weather. Good to be back.
You guys have had an incredible two years. The release of your third album "Deep Blue", another American tour, a European tour and to top it off back home in Australia you guys took home an ARIA award. How does all this sink in? Is it surreal?
Time flies, that's pretty much all you can say. We played around 40 different countries last year alone, but it still seems like yesterday we were in the studio recording Deep Blue. I guess we just keep on rolling, its what we do best.
How have you guys dealt with all the recognition and critical acclaim you're getting from your latest record "Deep Blue"?
We haven't. We just play the shows and watch the audience react. Reviews and recognition are nice, but in the end they are generally only a single persons opinion, its the live audience that decides if the songs work or not, but with that in mind Deep Blue has definitely blown all or other work out of the water.
You guys are not only a hit with a worldwide fan base, but you are also a hit with your peers: You Me At Six, A Day To Remember, The Warriors... What does that mean to you guys as a band to know that other bands out there have a large amount of respect and admiration for you?
It's nice. We've made so many friends around the world, and it does mean a lot when a band you respect repays that in kind, especially when there is a difference in the sounds both bands make.
How do you try and keep yourselves sane by being away from home for two years? A lot of surfing I bet?
Well we're not away full time to start with. We tour month on, month off so we can stay sane. When we're on the road we put it all on the stage, when were home we surf and hang out.
So now that you guys are home from touring are you planning on taking a fair bit of time off? What will you do with your time off?
Family time and surf, the two big priorities.
So the word around town is that you guys will be recording. When do you plan on hitting the studio?
We'll be in the studio mid year, for the longest studio stint we've ever had. We have a lot of it done already but we have some interesting plans that will only be possible once we hit the studio.
Do you plan on releasing another follow up dvd?
Yep, it's in the final stages of editing. I watched it last night, and i blew my mind, which is crazy considering I was there while it was filmed haha. But seriously, it is something you won't want to miss, there is some amazing footage in there.
This is probably the most important question with your Australian fans. Do you plan on spending some extra time touring around Australia?
Yes and no. We won't be back until the new record is out, but we're going to make the return something special. Plans are in motion.
